The Lake Dunstan Trail is a TWO-WAY trail that links the townships of Clyde and Cromwell. The trail offers cyclists and walkers a 42km ride (Grade 1-3) through unique and fascinating landscapes so characteristic of Central Otago as it journeys along Lake Dunstan, the Kawarau River and the mighty Clutha River Mata-au.
The ride has two very different sections, starting from our shop at the Cromwell Heritage Precinct to Cornish Point – great Grade 1 riding along Lake Dunstan and the Kawarau River. Visit Carrick Winery 8.5km's from our shop is a great stop off for hot and cold and they do amazing cheese scones.
Once you pass Cornish Point the trail changes to Grade 2 / 3. This section is highlighted by the stunning engineering associated with the cantilevers. You need to be prepared for climbing switchbacks (Cairnmuir Ladder has 9 of them), steep drop offs, narrowing of the trail so you need to be competent cyclists. Coffee & Burger Afloat just before the 19km mark beckons at the base of the Cairnmuir Ladder – allowing for a recharge before those switchbacks.
The second half is more challenging, with decent climbs rewarding you with spectacular views. Other highlights include stacked rock walls and the impressive 85m long Hugo Suspension Bridge, plus close-up views of the Clyde Dam before the final roll into Clyde where handsome heritage buildings house some lovely cafes and boutique shops.
